In most cases, yes.

Many hotels in India include an excellent breakfast buffet with both Indian and Western options. We found it was one of the easiest ways to start the day, especially when traveling with young children or adjusting to jet lag. It also saved us both time and money before heading out to explore.

Some of our favorite stays weren’t large hotel chains at all—they were family-run guesthouses.

Compared with many popular family destinations, visiting India’s famous forts, palaces, temples, museums, gardens, and historic sites rarely became one of our biggest travel expenses. Even on days when we visited several attractions, accommodation and transport usually had a much bigger impact on our overall budget.

The experiences that cost a little more were things like wildlife safaris, guided tours, private boat rides, or special cultural performances. These aren’t essential for every itinerary, but they’re often some of the most memorable experiences for families.

If you’re visiting India for the first time, this is one place where we’d happily spend a little more.

We originally assumed we’d travel everywhere by train because it was the cheaper option. After living in India, we realized that the best choice depends on the journey, not the price.
